Summer Writing Workshops!
/2021 Summer Workshops
Are you a Black or POC writer looking for affordable workshops designed with you in mind? Look no further! This summer I’m offering two workshops focused on craft and finding joy in your writing:
“Writing the Fantastical: A Short Fiction Intensive”
June 19, 2021, 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. EST
Suggested offering: $75-100.
Space is limited to 12 participants.
The purpose of this workshop is to help writers understand how the ordinary might transmogrify into the magical. In other words, how might the insensate become fully realized characters? We will examine this phenomenon through the use of imagery, metaphor, and personification, focusing on how the known world might be transformed through figurative language and association. Participants will engage in lively discussions of several story excerpts and use writing prompts to help generate new story ideas. Writers will leave the workshop with new strategies for developing future work and a toolkit for revising works in progress.

"Black Joy Unbound: A Generative Writing Workshop"
July 17, 2021 10-11:30 a.m. EST
Suggested offering: $50-75
Space limited to 15 participants
This workshop will help writers focus on unleashing the jouissance in writing about Blackness. What might our work look like if it were centered on characters/themes that reveled in pleasure and delight? If it were rife with exhalations of tenderness or configurations of curiosity? Writers will read and discuss Ross Gay, Alice Walker, and Adrienne Marie Brown, (circulated before the workshop), and spend time generating ideas from writing prompts. This workshop is generative, and writers can expect to leave the workshop with the building blocks of new work immersed in Black joy.
